The Ebell of Los Angeles
A nonprofit women's organization and cultural hub in Los Angeles, operating a historic campus, the 1,270-seat Wilshire Ebell Theatre, arts and education programs, and a scholarship fund for women scholars.
The Ebell of Los Angeles is a nonprofit women's organization and cultural hub in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1894, it has operated for more than 130 years, running programs in education, the arts, civic engagement and the advancement of women through events, performances, exhibitions and educational initiatives.
Its historic campus, built in 1927 and designated a historic landmark, houses collections and serves as a gathering place and civic venue. Within it sits the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, a 1,270-seat auditorium described as the nation's oldest theatre built by and still operated by women. Programming across the campus is curated and produced with women placed centre-stage, spanning community events, exhibitions and presentations.
The organisation also administers the Ebell/Flint Scholarship Program, which funds scholars pursuing degrees in law, social work, education and the arts. To date the programme has awarded more than $10m to over 4,800 scholars. Working practices reflect its nonprofit, mission-driven character: a women-centred institution with a long tradition of civic dialogue, stewardship of historic assets, and a stated commitment to educational access for women.
