Sandy Hook Promise

Nonpartisan nonprofit founded in 2012 that runs evidence-informed school violence prevention programmes, an anonymous reporting system and a 24/7 crisis centre across the United States.

Sandy Hook Promise is a nonpartisan nonprofit founded in 2012 in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. It works across the United States to prevent violence in schools, homes and communities, treating gun violence as a public health issue. Its approach combines evidence-informed prevention programmes, research and policy advocacy, alongside an emphasis on responsible gun ownership, school safety and youth mental health. The organisation's programmes include Say Something, which teaches students to recognise warning signs of crisis, isolation and at-risk behaviour and to speak up to a trusted adult, and Start With Hello, which promotes social inclusion and reduces isolation in schools. It also runs an Anonymous Reporting System for threats and at-risk behaviour, supported by a National Crisis Center providing 24/7/365 handling of tips and reports, as well as SAVE Promise Clubs, student-led groups focused on violence prevention in their schools. Sandy Hook Promise reports more than 9 million members and some 16,000 volunteers, with its student-facing programmes reaching millions of young people across the country. Work spans violence prevention research, programme development, crisis intervention and threat assessment, youth mental health, anonymous reporting infrastructure and public policy advocacy. The organisation describes its methods as community-based and research-driven, with youth empowerment and student leadership at the centre of its programming and a nonpartisan stance on policy.
