The Jed Foundation - SVMHA

Non-profit founded in 2000 that runs evidence-based programmes to protect young people's emotional health and prevent suicide in schools and communities.

The Jed Foundation - SVMHA is a non-profit organisation founded in 2000 by Donna and Phil Satow after they lost their son Jed to suicide. Its mission is to protect the emotional health of teenagers and young adults and to prevent suicide, working on the premise that mental health is a component of overall health and that shame and secrecy around the subject should be eliminated. The organisation is donor and philanthropy funded and operates across the United States.

Its work rests on evidence-based prevention frameworks delivered through three programmes. The first equips individuals with the life skills and knowledge needed to support emotional health. The second strengthens schools by helping them build mental health systems on campus. The third mobilises communities to support young people's mental well-being. A common purpose runs through them: that every young person should have access to mental health support.

The school-based programme is the largest of these efforts, partnering with more than 550 colleges, 150 high schools and 20 school districts. Across the country, the foundation's evidence-based framework has reached over 7 million students.
