Lutheran Services in America is the national office of a network of 300 Lutheran health and human services organizations across the United States. Founded in 1997 by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, it is headquartered in Washington, DC, and works with leaders, partners, and funders to catalyze innovation, strengthen organizational capacity, and advance public policy on behalf of its members.
The network delivers health and human services in fields including child and family services, aging and older adult services, intellectual and developmental disabilities services, veterans services, and refugee and immigrant services. Its member organizations serve 6 million people in 1,400 communities annually. The organisation has been recognised by the Chronicle of Philanthropy and Forbes as one of the nation's top nonprofit organisations.
The work is faith-based and rooted in Lutheran theology, drawing on shared values and heritage to pursue systemic change while serving people of all backgrounds. Stated goals include equitable outcomes for children, youth, and families; independence and choice for older adults; services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; and stability for veterans, refugees, and new Americans.
