The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia and its sister projects, running the infrastructure behind 65m+ articles in 300+ languages.
The Wikimedia Foundation is the non-profit organisation that hosts Wikipedia and operates the world's largest free knowledge projects. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in San Francisco, it maintains the technical infrastructure, servers and open-source software that keep the projects online, reaching roughly 15 billion views a month across more than 65 million articles in over 300 languages.
Alongside Wikipedia, the Foundation runs a family of sister projects: Wiktionary, a dictionary and thesaurus; Wikibooks, a collection of free textbooks and instructional manuals; Wikidata, a structured knowledge base; and Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free media files. It also supports Open the Knowledge, an initiative to close gaps in free knowledge content. Engineering work spans web infrastructure, server operations, content hosting platforms and knowledge management systems.
The organisation is a 501(c)(3) funded primarily through donations from readers. It maintains independence from corporate advertising and commercial influence, and states a mission of keeping knowledge accessible to everyone. Staff work alongside a global community of more than 265,000 volunteers; the Foundation provides grants to community members and affiliates and advocates for public policies that protect free knowledge.
