WaterAid America
WaterAid America, the U.S. chapter of WaterAid, is a nonprofit delivering clean water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in poor communities worldwide.
WaterAid America is the U.S. chapter of WaterAid, an international nonprofit founded in 1981 and dedicated exclusively to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) work in the world's poorest communities. Headquartered in New York City, the organisation works with communities, governments and local partners around the world. Since 1981 it reports reaching over 29 million people, drawing on more than 30 years of expertise in the sector.
Its programmes span four areas: clean water access projects, including drilling wells and building taps; sanitation work, comprising the installation of toilets and sustainable sanitation systems; hygiene education and behaviour and policy change; and sustainability programmes that supply knowledge and low-cost equipment so that water and sanitation systems can be operated and maintained over the long term. Technical work draws on water and sanitation systems engineering, low-cost equipment design, hygiene education and community capacity building.
The organisation describes its approach as mission-driven and partnership-oriented, favouring sustained solutions over one-off infrastructure and focusing on changing attitudes, behaviours and policies. Stated goals include improving the status of women and children, widening access to education and strengthening community health.
