Vitamin Angels is a global health nonprofit founded in 1994 by Howard Schiffer. It works to improve maternal and child nutrition in underserved communities that are often overlooked by existing health systems. Its programmes reach more than 74 million women, infants and young children each year, across more than 65 countries and all 50 U.S. states.
The organisation delivers its work through four main channels: prenatal vitamin and mineral supplements for pregnant women; vitamin A supplementation for infants and young children; deworming services delivered via local partner organisations; and technical assistance, training and evidence-based nutrition resources that build the capacity of those partners. It works with more than 1,200 local partner organisations, including governments. Its technical domains span maternal and child nutrition, public health programme delivery, vitamin and mineral supplementation, capacity building and technical assistance to local health organisations.
Vitamin Angels states that its culture is based on collaboration, inclusivity, integrity and accountability. Programmes are grounded in long-term relationships with local partners, with an emphasis on local ownership and on sustaining programmes within existing structures. The organisation also works with corporate and philanthropic partners.
