Vitalant

Nonprofit blood and biotherapies organisation supplying safe blood to about 900 U.S. hospitals, with donation centres in nearly 30 states, laboratory services and a research institute.

Vitalant is one of the largest nonprofit blood and biotherapies healthcare organisations in the United States, supplying safe blood to hospitals and patients nationwide. Founded in 1943 as the Salt River Valley Blood Bank in Phoenix, Arizona, the organisation has operated for more than 80 years and today serves roughly 900 hospitals. Its network of about 115 donation centres spans nearly 30 states, and it hosts approximately 60,000 blood drives a year, relying on volunteer donors to meet demand from millions of people who depend on blood products.

The organisation's work extends well beyond collection. Its remit covers transfusion medicine, blood banking, laboratory services, blood donor testing and donor epidemiology, cellular therapy, virus discovery and biotherapies. Vitalant provides specialised laboratory services alongside blood collection and disseminates advances in transfusion medicine to clinicians across the country. It is a founding member of AABB and was a driving force in the creation of America's Blood Centers.

Research is conducted through the Vitalant Research Institute, whose scientific studies range from blood donor epidemiology to cellular therapy and virus discovery. Vitalant is also a partner in Creative Testing Solutions, the largest independent blood donor testing organisation in the United States, which tests 70% of the nation's blood supply. The organisation describes its work as pushing boundaries in the experience, practice and application of blood products and technology.

Employment spans healthcare, laboratory testing, research and biotechnology, blood banking, and hospital and clinical care, across a distributed footprint that covers nearly 30 states.
