The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) is a nonprofit organisation working in the United States at federal, state and local levels to create conditions in which people with Down syndrome can thrive. Its stated aim is to drive change through policy, research and community support, working in partnership with local Down syndrome organisations rather than in place of them; it counts more than 250 such partners.
The organisation operates through three programmatic areas. Policy & Advocacy drives policy change on behalf of people with Down syndrome across all levels of government. Research advances work focused on the needs and potential of people with Down syndrome. Community Access and Supports connects families with resources spanning education, employment, health, caregiving, recreation and advocacy across the lifespan.
NDSS serves individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the professionals who support them, and brings together families, advocates, researchers, educators, healthcare professionals and policymakers. Collaboration is central to the mission, with local organisations treated as equal partners. The organisation focuses on providing accurate, accessible information, and on promoting inclusive education and employment, health and wellness, and lifespan-oriented support.
