Global nonprofit funding type 1 diabetes research, advocating for access to care, and providing T1D resources, supported by community fundraising events and a US chapter network.
Breakthrough T1D is a global nonprofit organisation dedicated to type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy. It funds scientific research aimed at cures, campaigns for access to care, and provides resources for people living with the chronic condition. The organisation describes itself as the world's leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy body.
Its work is organised around four programmes. A research investment programme backs promising scientific research with the aim of turning ideas into therapies and medical devices. An advocacy and access-to-care initiative works with government agencies, regulatory bodies and insurers to remove barriers to essential care. A resources and guidance service supports people across the T1D journey, from diagnosis through lifelong management. Community fundraising events - walks, rides, runs, galas and peer-to-peer campaigns - provide the philanthropic funding on which the organisation operates.
The organisation has technical interests spanning biomedical research, therapeutics development, medical device development, and the funding of clinical and scientific research. It operates through an extensive network of local chapters across the United States, with staff and programmes in the American heartland, on the West Coast, and in international markets including Europe.
Breakthrough T1D describes its culture as mission-driven and community-oriented, connecting families, healthcare professionals, researchers and advocates, with a stated aim of creating a world where type 1 diabetes no longer limits anyone's potential.
