Best Buddies International

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) founded in 1989 running nearly 3,000 chapters worldwide that create friendships, jobs, leadership, independent living and family support for people with IDD.

Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organisation founded in 1989 to build a global volunteer movement creating opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). What began as a single school club now operates nearly 3,000 chapters across all 50 US states and internationally, addressing a population of some 200 million people worldwide with IDD. Its stated aim is to end the social, physical and economic isolation of this population.

The organisation's work is structured around Five Mission Pillars. One-to-One Friendships supports meaningful friendships between people with IDD and their peers. Integrated Employment helps individuals with IDD secure jobs. Leadership Development builds communication and advocacy skills. Inclusive Living supports people with IDD to live independently. Family Support provides assistance to families of individuals with IDD.

The organisation operates within the disability services, advocacy and volunteer sectors, with a particular focus on employment and independent living support. Its culture is volunteer-driven and mission-led, centred on inclusion, friendship, employment and independence for people with IDD. With operations spanning every US state as well as international chapters, roles are tied to a distributed, community-based model of service delivery.
