Health Resources in Action (HRiA)
A national non-profit, founded in 1957, that consults and collaborates on public health, health equity, evaluation, grantmaking and systems change across the United States.
Health Resources in Action (HRiA) is a national non-profit organisation founded in 1957, originally as The Medical Foundation. It works with communities, organisations and funders across the United States on access and equity in health and social systems, with particular activity in Massachusetts, where its history began with funding biomedical research. Its stated aim is to drive sustainable public health impact through connecting, consulting and collaborating with partners.
The organisation's work is organised into several service areas: Assessment & Planning, Capacity Building, Evaluation, Grantmaking & Philanthropy, Information & Referral, and Policy & Systems Change. These cover public health assessment and planning grounded in community engagement, evaluation of public health programmes, the building of organisational and community capacity, grantmaking and philanthropic services, referral into health and social system resources, and policy work addressing root causes of health inequities.
HRiA applies a Health Equity Framework centred on racial justice, used to identify and address root causes of health inequities, shift narratives and correct power imbalances. Anti-racist approaches and authentic community engagement are described as underpinning all of its services. Technical domains include public health, biomedical research funding, health equity and racial justice, programme evaluation, assessment and planning, capacity building, grantmaking and philanthropy, policy and systems change, and information and referral services.
