Citizen University

Citizen University is a US non-profit that builds a culture of responsible citizenship through trainings, rituals, gatherings, networks of practice and civic projects.

Citizen University is a non-profit organisation working to build a culture of powerful, responsible citizenship across the United States. The organisation holds that the strength of a democracy depends less on the presence of strong leaders than on the willingness of citizens to participate, and that the culture, norms and habits surrounding civic life determine whether democracy thrives. Its work is conducted through gatherings, rituals, workshops, trainings, networks of practice and civic projects, reaching thousands of Americans.

Programmes include Live Like a Citizen, an immersive training course that equips participants to act as civic catalysts in their own communities, and the National Civic Collaboratory, a network linking civic innovators around the country. A related Youth Collaboratory addresses civic engagement among younger participants. Civic Saturdays, a recurring gathering format, and the Power Walk Field Guide, a practical resource for civic engagement, extend these efforts into local settings.

The organisation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity and describes itself as mission-driven, with a culture built around immersive trainings, rituals, gatherings and networks of practice. It maintains a presence in Seattle, Washington and operates nationally across the United States.
