Black Futures Lab is a nonprofit political organisation that works with Black people across the United States to build independent political power. Its stated view is that conventional advocacy alone is insufficient; the organisation instead combines community-based survey research, policy experimentation, voter education, electoral campaigning and leadership development to shape public policy and strengthen organising infrastructure year-round.
Its flagship initiative, the Black Census Project, gathers the experiences and priorities of Black people at unprecedented scale, using community data to inform public policy. Related work includes electoral campaigns and voting resources intended to help Black communities participate fully in democracy. Alongside this, the We Got the Power programme gives organisers practical training in base-building and campaign development, while the Black Futures Policy Institute trains emerging leaders in advocacy and policy.
The organisation's work spans several disciplines: data collection and analysis for public policy, community-based survey research, campaign organising, and training and leadership development. It is Black-led and community-centred in its mission, with an emphasis on investing in Black-led organising infrastructure and on helping communities imagine and build better public alternatives. Its activities run across the United States.
