Zearn is a nonprofit that builds Zearn Math, a research-backed K-8 digital maths learning platform with 1,000+ lessons used in schools nationwide.
Zearn is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organisation founded in 2012. It builds Zearn Math, a research-backed K-8 mathematics learning platform used in schools and classrooms across the United States. The platform comprises more than 1,000 digital lessons covering every objective of K-8 maths, combining short instructional videos from on-screen teachers, visual models, digital manipulatives and real-time feedback. Lessons follow the concrete-to-pictorial-to-abstract pedagogical strategy and include differentiated support, pause points for problem solving and Tier 1 intervention.
The scale is considerable: roughly one in four elementary-school students nationwide and more than 1m middle-school students use the platform. Large-scale statewide analyses found that students who used Zearn Math consistently grew maths scores 2.5 times more than matched students who did not. Evidence for ESSA, a nationally recognised independent clearinghouse, gives the product its highest designation, a “Strong” (Tier 1) rating.
Technical work spans digital learning platforms, educational technology, adaptive learning, instructional design and learning science research. The team of 51-200 people is distributed across the United States and works on a product that is free for individual teachers and classrooms. Zearn states its mission as the belief that every kid is a math kid, and frames its curriculum development around research-backed methods.
