Magpie Literacy

Magpie Literacy is a nonprofit building research-based digital literacy tools, including a K–2 tool used in classrooms nationwide and a 3–8 tool in development, grounded in the science of reading.

Magpie Literacy develops research-based digital literacy tools intended to help every child become a strong reader. The organisation's stated mission is to eradicate illiteracy through a digital-first, student-centered approach, and it works from the science of reading to put current research findings into classroom practice. Magpie Literacy is a fiscally sponsored nonprofit of Cambiar Education and operates in K–12 education and education technology across the United States.

Its flagship K–2 Literacy Tool is already deployed in classrooms nationwide, providing year-round support in foundational literacy skills. The tool combines research-based instructional videos with interactive games, covering phonemic awareness, decoding and encoding, word chaining, letter formation, print concepts, high-frequency words and meaningful reading practice. A second product for grades 3–8, spanning upper elementary and middle school learners, is currently in development and is being co-designed with educators and students across the country.

The work sits at the intersection of several technical domains: digital literacy tools, educational game design, instructional video and interactive learning technology, all grounded in science of reading research. Magpie Literacy co-designs its solutions with educators, students and communities, and describes its approach as combining research-backed instruction with game design. The context for its work is that only one-third of American students read at grade level.
