Vision To Learn
Nonprofit founded in 2012 operating mobile vision clinics that provide free screenings, eye exams and prescription glasses to students in low-income communities.
Vision To Learn is a nonprofit founded in 2012 by philanthropist and former investment banker Austin Beutner. It operates mobile vision clinics that travel to schools in low-income communities to deliver free vision screenings, eye exams, and prescription glasses, at no cost to children or their families. The organisation's premise is that children who cannot see cannot learn; it is described as the largest school-based vision care nonprofit in the nation.
The model began as a pilot serving five children with glasses at Napa Elementary School in Northridge, California, and has since expanded from a single van in Los Angeles to a national network. Vision To Learn reports having provided more than 3.8 million vision screenings, 765,000 eye exams and 638,000 pairs of prescription glasses. Its work spans more than 860 cities across 16 U.S. states, plus Hawaii and Washington D.C.
Services are delivered through partnerships with school districts, public health departments and healthcare providers. The organisation works across pediatric healthcare, vision care and optometry, K-12 education and public health, with a mission-driven focus on healthcare access for children in underserved communities.
