Food4Education

African-led nonprofit founded in 2012 that operates and scales school feeding in Kenya, serving over 640,000 learners daily using NFC wristbands and mobile money payments.

Food4Education is an African-led nonprofit that runs and scales a school feeding model across Africa. Founded in 2012 and operating primarily in Kenya, it delivers hot, nutritious, low-cost daily meals to learners in public schools and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres. The organisation now feeds more than 640,000 learners each day across over 2,100 schools and ECD centres in 13 Kenyan counties, up from 25 children at its founding. It has set targets of 1 million learners in Kenya by 2027 and 2 million across Africa by 2030.

Its School Feeding Program is supported by Tap2Eat, an NFC wristband system in which bands worn by children are linked to a mobile money payment account. Parents pay for meals through the mobile money system; children tap their wristband to eat, with meal access completed in under five seconds. The organisation's technical work spans NFC wearable technology, mobile money and digital payment systems, food supply chain and logistics, and operations technology for large-scale meal delivery.

The model is described as locally rooted, with reinvestment in local economies, and is intended to be shared as an open blueprint for scaling school feeding elsewhere in Africa. Food4Education is an award-winning organisation that reports operating with the excellence of a global business, with African-led leadership and a culture of learning by doing and iterative improvement. Its stated focus areas are nutrition, education outcomes and job creation.
