Transgender Law Center
Transgender Law Center is a national trans-led legal and policy advocacy organization working on civil rights, litigation, and community programs for transgender people in the United States.
Founded in 2002, Transgender Law Center (TLC) is the largest national transgender-led organization in the United States. Its stated aim is self-determination for all people: changing law, policy, and attitudes so that people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of gender identity or expression. The organization works across the United States.
TLC's work spans legal advocacy, policy reform, civil rights litigation, and community organizing. Its legal record includes precedent-setting victories such as Macy v. Holder and Whitaker v. Kenosha Unified School District. Programmes operated by the organization include Positively Trans, which serves transgender people living with HIV; Black Trans Circles, supporting Black transgender communities; the Disability Project, focused on disabled transgender and gender nonconforming people; the Gender Justice Leadership Programs; and the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project, supporting Black LGBTQIA+ migrants.
The organization is trans-led and describes its strategies as community-driven, grounded in legal expertise and committed to racial justice. It prioritises BIPOC, disabled, and HIV+ communities, with an orientation toward the intersection of racial, economic, and social justice. TLC operates in the legal services, nonprofit advocacy, civil rights, and LGBTQ+ rights sectors.
