Scripps Research

Private non-profit biomedical research institute, founded 1924, with campuses in Jupiter, Florida and La Jolla, California, working across drug discovery, digital and precision medicine.

Scripps Research is a private, non-profit biomedical research institute founded in 1924 by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. It operates from two campuses - in Jupiter, Florida and La Jolla, California - and celebrated its centennial in 2024. The institute comprises more than 200 laboratories spread across six academic departments, and counts multiple Nobel laureates among its researchers.

Its work spans foundational and translational science, merging biology, chemistry and computer science to produce pioneering drugs and advances in digital and precision medicine. Field strengths include immunology, infectious diseases (COVID-19, flu, HIV), neuroscience, oncology and cardiology. Two institutes anchor this effort: the Calibr-Skaggs Institute for Innovative Medicines, which drives the development of new medicines, and the Scripps Research Translational Institute, which turns discoveries into breakthroughs in digital and precision medicine.

The Skaggs Graduate School of Chemical and Biological Sciences trains doctoral students in chemical and biological sciences and is consistently ranked among the top doctoral programmes in the United States. The institute describes a collaborative culture in which researchers work across departments, sharing insights and technologies, and in which scientists are empowered to pursue bold, long-term research questions aimed at improving human health.
