Buck Institute for Research on Aging

Independent biomedical research institute in Novato, California, founded in 1999 to study the biology of aging and develop interventions to extend human healthspan.

The Buck Institute for Research on Aging is an independent biomedical research institute based in Novato, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 1999, it was the world's first institute devoted solely to understanding the biology of aging and to developing interventions intended to extend human healthspan. It is the largest independent scientific institute in the Bay Area.

Its research spans the basic mechanisms of aging, AI and computational biology, cancer associated with aging, neurodegeneration, stem cells and regenerative medicine, and cellular stress and disease. Faculty work on fundamental processes of ageing with the aim of delaying or preventing several age-related diseases at once, rather than treating them individually. The institute's stated ambition is a global effort to transform healthcare and to end the threat of age-related disease for this and future generations.

Beyond laboratory research, the institute runs graduate education programmes and postdoctoral training for the next generation of ageing-science researchers, alongside community outreach and public education. Its working culture is interdisciplinary and collaborative: the institute was founded by scientists and philanthropists, and it describes its approach as pioneering and mission-driven, with a focus on healthy minds and healthy bodies at every age.

Relevant sectors include biomedical research, healthcare, higher education and scientific training, and therapeutics for age-related disease. Further information is available at https://buckinstitute.org/.
