National Education Association

A US labour union and advocacy organisation representing nearly 3 million educators, advancing public education through member benefits, grants and professional programmes.

The National Education Association (NEA) is a labour union and advocacy organisation headquartered in Washington, D.C., and the largest such body in the United States. Founded in 1857 by 100 teachers, it now represents nearly 3 million members across the country, working on behalf of educators and students from preschool through university graduate programmes.

Its stated purpose is to advance public education and to press for equitable working conditions, dignified pay, healthcare access, retirement security and debt support for educators. Student-centred advocacy covers areas such as nutrition programmes, disability rights and closing achievement gaps. The organisation evolved from a professional association into a labour union model, and describes its culture as built on collective voice and solidarity among educators.

Two affiliated programmes sit alongside the union's core work. The NEA Foundation is an independent national philanthropic organisation founded by educators that provides education grants and leadership programmes supporting teachers in closing achievement gaps and expanding classroom innovation. NEA Member Benefits offers liability insurance, legal representation, professional development and member discounts.

NEA's presence is concentrated in the United States, with its headquarters in Washington, D.C. Its work spans education, labour advocacy, public education and education philanthropy.
