The Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law is a nonprofit public interest law organization founded in 1982. It provides free family law legal services, education and advocacy to low-income residents of Los Angeles County, with a focus on protecting victims of domestic violence and improving the well-being of children in poverty. The organization was established as a co-sponsored project of the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and the Women's Law Center.
Its direct legal services cover seven family law issue areas: child custody and visitation, child support, parentage, restraining orders, divorce, property division and spousal support. Alongside representation and assistance, the Center runs legal education programmes designed to help clients protect themselves and their children from domestic violence, poverty, housing insecurity and other barriers to stability, as well as advocacy work aimed at securing meaningful access to justice through the family law system.
The Center describes its mission as rooted in dignity, empowerment and service. It states that it treats every client with respect and compassion and maintains a supportive environment in which survivors of trauma can obtain legal help. Its stated aim is to help clients rebuild their lives, with a broader commitment to social justice and access to justice for low-income populations.
