Emergent

Emergent is a non-profit intermediary mobilising public and private finance for emissions reductions from deforestation, facilitating jurisdictional carbon credit transactions between tropical forest countries and buyers.

Emergent is a non-profit intermediary that mobilises public and private finance to support emissions reductions from deforestation. Its central activity is the facilitation of large-scale transactions in high-integrity jurisdictional carbon credits, bringing tropical forest countries and the private sector together to trade credits tied to carbon reduction and forest protection goals. The organisation operates globally, across tropical forest countries.

At the core of this work is a jurisdictional carbon credit marketplace and intermediation platform. The approach is designed to handle transactions at the jurisdictional level rather than project by project, creating a marketplace that connects forest governments with buyers seeking verified emissions reductions. Relevant technical areas include tropical forest conservation, climate finance, carbon markets, REDD+, carbon credit transaction infrastructure and climate policy.

Emergent describes itself as a mission-driven organisation and as a trusted intermediary between forest governments and the private sector. Its team is largely virtual and is composed of finance and policy experts; the culture emphasises collaboration, integrity and impact, with significant autonomy and responsibility for individual team members and an expectation of ownership and entrepreneurship.

The organisation is supported by a coalition that includes The Rockefeller Foundation, the Environmental Defense Fund and NICFI, the Norwegian government's International Climate and Forest Initiative.
