American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

ASME is a nonprofit engineering society founded in 1880, developing codes and standards, certifications, education and publications for mechanical engineers worldwide.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is a nonprofit engineering society founded in 1880 by a small group of industrialists concerned with the effects of industrialisation. Its stated mission is to advance engineering for the benefit of humanity, pursued through codes and standards, certification, learning, research, conferences and publications. The society counts more than 90,000 members across over 135 countries.

ASME's most prominent technical product is the Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), first published in 1915 to improve the safety of boilers and pressure vessels used in manufacturing and construction. It was subsequently incorporated into law in most North American territories. Alongside it, the society maintains more than 600 codes and standards spanning pipeline production, elevators and escalators, materials handling, gas turbines and nuclear power, issued in print and online.

Beyond standard-setting, ASME runs certification programmes for engineering professionals and equipment, continuing education and professional development for the engineering community, technical conferences, and research and publishing activity. Its work touches industries including manufacturing, construction, boilers and pressure vessels, pipelines, lifting and materials-handling equipment, gas turbines and nuclear power, with a stated focus on safety, quality and public benefit.
