The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is a professional organisation for physicians and other oncology professionals, founded in 1964 by seven physicians. It describes its mission as conquering cancer through research, education and the promotion of the highest quality of patient care. The society reports more than 50,000 members and is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, with a global reach.
ASCO's work spans several well-known publications and programmes. The Journal of Clinical Oncology is its peer-reviewed journal; the ASCO Annual Meeting draws tens of thousands of oncology professionals to share practice-changing research; and its Clinical Practice Guidelines set evidence-based standards for cancer treatment worldwide. The society also produces ASCO in Action, a policy analysis and advocacy resource for members, and is affiliated with the Conquer Cancer Foundation, which funds cancer research and supports early-career investigators.
The organisation operates across the oncology, healthcare, medical research and medical education sectors. It describes its culture as collaborative and customer-centric, and states that it embraces flexibility and innovation in its workplace practices.
