St. Anthony Foundation

St. Anthony Foundation runs 12 integrated programs in San Francisco's Tenderloin, providing free meals, medical care, addiction recovery, workforce development and other services to people in poverty.

St. Anthony Foundation is a nonprofit safety net service center based in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. Founded in 1950 by Father Alfred Boeddeker, it provides essential services, health care and pathways to stability for families and individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness and food insecurity. The organisation operates as a community hub serving thousands of San Franciscans daily.

Its work is organised around 12 integrated programs. These include free meal service through the Foundation's dining room, which has provided more than 49 million meals since founding, alongside medical care, addiction recovery treatment, workforce development, free clothing distribution and technology access. The model addresses immediate needs while supporting longer-term stability.

Operations run on the efforts of dedicated staff and thousands of volunteers. The Foundation describes its approach as rooted in Franciscan values of compassion, dignity and respect, meeting people where they are and treating everyone as part of the St. Anthony's family. Roles are based at its San Francisco locations.
