Schoolhouse
Schoolhouse operates a free, live, peer-to-peer tutoring platform connecting students with volunteer peer tutors across more than 180 countries.
Schoolhouse runs what it describes as the world's largest platform for free, live, peer-to-peer tutoring, connecting students with volunteer peer tutors rather than professional instructors. Founded in 2020 by Sal Khan during the covid-19 pandemic, the organisation works in education technology, with a technical focus on online learning platforms, peer-to-peer tutoring systems and live video tutoring. Its reach is global: more than 174,000 students in over 180 countries, and over 460,000 tutoring sessions facilitated to date.
The platform's main service is live tutoring delivered by student volunteers, covering homework help and academic subjects at no cost to learners. Alongside this, Schoolhouse offers peer-led SAT preparation, including sessions with peers who have recently scored highly on the exam, and Dialogues, a programme of one-on-one conversations on meaningful topics intended to build connection and belonging among students. The underlying operating model is volunteer-powered throughout.
The organisation's stated values are to think big and start small, uplift each other, step in, and always be a learner. It places particular weight on encouragement, conversation and a sense of belonging, and describes its environment as approachable and built on trust and genuine human connection. Its stated mission is to unlock every student's potential through free, peer-powered learning.
