Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) is a trans-led nonprofit founded in 2024 through the merger of the National Center for Transgender Equality and the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund. The organisation works to advance legal and political change for transgender people in the United States, combining roughly four decades of advocacy experience from its predecessor bodies. Transgender people form both the constituency it serves and a central part of its leadership.
Its work spans litigation, policy advocacy, community organising, electoral and voter engagement, public education, survey research, legal support services and communications. Staff include policy experts, litigators, community organisers, educators and communications professionals, and campaigns are run across departments, connecting legal strategy with organising, policy and electoral work. The organisation collaborates with partners in government at multiple levels and within the wider movement.
Published programmes include the Trans Legal Survival Guide, a practical handbook for navigating legal issues; Know Your Rights materials setting out legal rights for transgender people; the ID Documents Center, which helps with updating identity documents; name-change assistance; and the U.S. Trans Survey, a research project covering transgender people across the country. All activity is based in the United States.
A4TE describes itself as committed to a diverse, intersectional team and to values of kindness, optimism, talent and dedication to social justice.
