American Oversight is a nonpartisan, nonprofit watchdog founded in 2017 that enforces the public's right to government records. The organisation obtains and publishes documents from federal, state and local agencies through freedom-of-information requests and public records litigation, making them freely available to support congressional inquiries, investigative journalism and independent action by partner organisations.

Its published records archive holds more than one million pages of government documents, drawn from tens of thousands of documents obtained since launch. Work spans public records litigation, FOIA and open records law, investigative research, and the publishing and archiving of the records themselves. Areas of focus include government oversight and accountability, elections and democracy, immigration and federal custody oversight, and public transparency.

The team numbers more than 30 lawyers, researchers and communicators, all based in the United States. The mission is fixed on truth, accountability and democracy, and the organisation is explicitly nonpartisan and nonprofit.
